An adventure in Engineering

Brad - Apprentice Engineer

What year did you commence on the Jetstar Apprentice Program?

I started the apprenticeship at the beginning of 2022. My year’s intake were the guinea pigs for the Melbourne Apprenticeship program as it was previously in Newcastle, and luckily for me, I am originally from Melbourne, so I didn’t have to relocate for this opportunity like numerous of my colleagues did.

What is your Trade Stream?

Due to being the first year of the intake in Melbourne, we were lucky enough to have the choice on what trade stream to elect. After receiving information on all the options, I was still undecided which trade stream to pick right until the day we had to make the official decision.  In the end I chose the mechanical trade stream and haven’t looked back since.

What have been the highlights of the Jetstar Apprentice Program?

The highlight of the program so far has been the everyday learning, as there is so much involved in maintaining aircraft. Also, the opportunities to work at other ports such as Sydney, where I observed Boeing carrying out repairs on one of our aircraft.

I have also enjoyed the opportunity to work with different people and large jobs such as engine changes or landing gear changes.

What support have you received throughout the Apprentice Program?

Anyone and everyone is willing to help us as Jetstar Apprentices. Literally all the AME’s and LAME’s that I have worked with are all very willing to not only help, but also teach. There are also direct contacts such as the Apprentice Facilitator that are there solely to help us apprentices with anything we need, and they are always super helpful.

What advice would you give to anyone considering applying for the Apprentice Program or joining the aviation industry?

If you’re keen and enthusiastic to learn, anyone can do it, regardless of your skill set, tool skills or aviation/plane knowledge as that can be learnt during the Apprenticeship Program.  It is such a unique experience and there is so much to learn between the different systems on the planes to the different plane models themselves. The Jetstar Apprenticeship Program and a career in Aircraft Maintenance Engineering is an environment of comradery and constant learning as there is always something more to learn.\

Applications to the 2025 Jetstar Apprentice Program open on 1 May 2024.
