Kym - Ramp Manager

The voice of experience

The fact that his team had more than doubled since he started with Jetstar made Kym feel proud. He'd watched them find their way in the organisation and helped many of them climb the ladder. Being a mentor was never something he thought he could do, but as more team members came to him for advice, he discovered he had a talent for it.

Choosing the best career path isn't easy in a business that runs on big ideas and fast delivery. He'd learned that from experience and from some inspiring leaders. Now it was his turn to pass on advice and make sure people were headed in the right direction. It was quite a responsibility, but somehow taking people under your wing at Jetstar felt like a natural thing to do.

The unforgettable journey

Watching night fall over Ho Chi Minh city while savouring Vietnamese coffee at a local café was the perfect end to a busy day. The first month of Kym's short-term project overseas with Jetstar was everything he had hoped – exhilarating, challenging and at times, overwhelming. But he was loving it.

He had never worked in another culture before but everyone was so friendly. As expected, language proved a challenge. As a Ramp Manager back in Adelaide, updating the team didn't take too long. Here, briefing his Vietnamese team in English, he made sure he went over every point until there were smiles and nods all round.

His interpreter, Linh, had been fantastic. She helped him not only to understand airport operations in Vietnam, but also to earn the trust and respect of the teams. With more aircraft joining the fleet here soon, that was a really important step. They'd become good friends.

As his colleagues arrived to mark the end of another big week, Kym finished his sweet, icy coffee. The city looked fantastic and it was time to celebrate.
