Lauren - 787 First Officer

The final check

Lauren's eye followed the curve of the Dreamliner's wing as it spiralled above her. It was a privilege to admire such great design from close up. ‘It's a thing of beauty,' she thought to herself. In less than an hour, she would experience its power first-hand.

Her career had come so far. She'd flown A320s and A330s across Australia and overseas. She'd achieved accreditation to fly in to Queenstown – one of the most challenging and beautiful airports to fly in to anywhere. And now here she was, about to settle in to the cockpit of the 787 – one of the most technologically advanced aircraft in the world. Not many pilots get those opportunities – she had Jetstar's amazing growth to thank for that.

Up on the flight deck, her eyes lit up at the technology. She thought about how far her passion for flying had brought her. ‘Where to next?' she wondered. With Jetstar's growing network, that could be anywhere.

The trailblazer

The cloud had given way to blue sky and the view from the cockpit – Queenstown sitting between Coronet Peak and the Remarkables – was breathtaking. For Lauren, a lifetime dream that began with charter flights around remote Australia had become reality and now here she was – flying into one of the most challenging airports in the world.

Joining Jetstar had been her big break and soon she was scheduled to fly the 787. It was one thing having a passion to fly, but the reality needed drive, determination and more than a little support.

Queenstown airport was approaching and it was time for a final check. Sudden winds had tested her before here, but it was amazing how fast training kicked in. It was an exhilarating feeling – being alert but composed, thinking quickly but confidently. That's when you really knew hours in the simulator had paid off.

But today the sun shone bright and everything looked good. It was a great day to be a pilot.
